An electrifying Charli XCX Reading Festival Headline Set unfolded on Friday evening, showcasing hits from across her entire music career in her first UK festival appearance since releasing her latest studio album, Music, Fashion, Film. The record marks a pivot from her culture-shaping electronic-pop album Brat toward a more rock-influenced sound, and her Reading set highlighted the best of both eras alongside fan-favorite tracks from her back catalogue.

Inside the Charli XCX Reading Festival Headline Set

The performance opened with distorted, black-and-white video projections of Charli, which continued throughout the set, as tens of thousands gathered at the main stage erupted when the opening chords of her new album’s lead single, Rock Music, struck up. She followed with punchy renditions of newer tracks Wink Wink, Yeah, and Card Declined, before stepping offstage to swap a black sparkly blazer for a black corseted dress — one of several costume changes across the night.

The set’s second act showcased the full breadth of her catalogue, moving from Track 10, a pop hit from her 2017 mixtape, to the melancholic House, which she co-wrote for the recent Wuthering Heights soundtrack album. Fans craving her more dance-driven material got their moment too, as she broke into Club Classics, 365, and the Grammy-winning Von Dutch from Brat — the 2024 album that became a cultural phenomenon and propelled her into a new tier of pop stardom.

An Ending That Leaned Into the Unexpected

After returning to the punkier style of Music, Fashion, Film for the closing stretch, Charli ended the night with the album’s final track, No One Lasts Forever. The song closes with a sampled line from filmmaker David Cronenberg — “no one lasts forever / they are dead, they are gone” and “oblivion is freedom” — and Charli let those words ring out over the crowd as she stood surrounded by her dancers, a stark, almost meditative close to an otherwise maximalist show.

The production itself represented a clear step up from her previous Brat-era tour, with more elaborate staging, dramatic pyrotechnics, strobe lighting, and a live band and dancers accompanying her throughout.

A Night of Headliners

Charli’s set was one half of Reading’s opening-night headline bill, with Irish rock band Fontaines DC following her on the main stage. Fans waited roughly half an hour longer than scheduled due to a delay, but the Dublin group quickly won the crowd back with hits including Favourite and I Love You, closing their own set with the Grammy-nominated track Starbuster as the crowd sang the lyrics back to them.

Ahead of both headline sets, grime artist Skepta powered through heavy downpours to warm up the main stage crowd, channeling some of the same high-energy spirit that has defined Charli’s recent live shows.

What It Means for Her Next Era

With this being her first major UK festival appearance since Music, Fashion, Film’s release, the show offered a clear signal of how she intends to balance her new rock-leaning material with the Brat-era songs that made her a household name. For an artist who has now built two genuinely distinct pop eras in consecutive years, Reading suggested she has no interest in choosing between them.

The willingness to open with a brand-new single rather than lead with her biggest crowd-pleasers was itself a statement of confidence, betting that a headline crowd already invested in her artistry would follow her into unfamiliar territory before rewarding them with the songs they came to hear. Judging by the reaction across the field, that bet paid off.
