Japan’s Ministry of Finance has confirmed a japan record forex intervention of ¥15.39 trillion across July and August, the largest monthly amount the country has ever spent buying yen and selling dollars to slow the currency’s decline. The figure underscores how aggressively Tokyo is now willing to act to defend the yen, even as the intervention has so far done little to reverse the broader trend.

Inside the Japan Record Forex Intervention

Currency interventions of this scale are rare and expensive, and the size of this one signals how seriously Japanese officials view the yen’s weakness. Selling dollars and buying yen directly in the market is meant to create upward pressure on the currency, but it works best when paired with a shift in the broader interest-rate gap between Japan and the United States — something the Bank of Japan has moved on only gradually. Without that support, even record-sized interventions tend to produce short-lived bounces rather than a lasting turnaround.

That pattern held true again this time. Despite the record spending, the yen weakened past ¥160 per dollar in the weeks that followed, eroding much of the ground the intervention had bought. Traders are now watching closely for signs of when — or whether — authorities will step back into the market a second time, and how much firepower they have left to spend if they do.

Why the Yen Keeps Sliding

The core driver remains the interest-rate gap between Japan and the United States. As long as U.S. rates stay meaningfully higher than Japan’s, investors are drawn to hold dollars over yen for the better return, and that flow tends to overwhelm intervention efforts that aren’t backed by a matching move in interest-rate policy. Japan has raised rates from its long-standing near-zero stance in recent years, but the gap with U.S. rates remains wide enough to keep the pressure on.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has weighed in on the currency’s slide as well, warning that a “disorderly yen” would risk pushing U.S. rates higher too, a sign that Washington is watching the situation closely even though it has stopped short of detailing how much the U.S. itself deployed during a separate late-July intervention. That kind of cross-border coordination, even informal, is unusual and points to how much the yen’s weakness has become a shared concern rather than a purely domestic Japanese issue.

What a Weak Yen Means at Home

A weaker yen makes imported energy, food, and raw materials more expensive for Japanese households and businesses, adding to inflationary pressure that the Bank of Japan has been trying to manage carefully. It does help Japanese exporters by making their goods cheaper abroad, which is part of why the country has been slower than some to aggressively defend the currency in the past. But with living costs rising faster than wages for many households, the political pressure to act has grown.

Record intervention spending also draws scrutiny over how much of Japan’s foreign currency reserves officials are willing to commit, since reserves used for intervention are not unlimited and drawing them down too aggressively could limit Tokyo’s options if a bigger crisis emerges later.

What to Watch Next

With the yen still trading past ¥160 despite the record japan record forex intervention, markets are focused on the Bank of Japan’s next policy meeting for signs of a rate move that could do what direct intervention alone has not. Until then, traders expect officials to keep intervention as an option on the table, even if a repeat at this scale would be a significant commitment so soon after the last one.
